Article 5 of Decree no. 2009-464 of April 23, 2009 on contract doctoral students in public higher education or research establishments stipulates that "the service of a contract doctoral student may be devoted exclusively to research activities linked to the preparation of the doctorate, or may include, in addition to these research activities, an annual service equal to one-sixth of the effective annual working time set by the aforementioned Decree of August 25, 2000, and devoted to the following activities
- teaching as part of a teaching team, for a service equal to no more than one-third of the reference annual teaching service for teacher-researchers, as defined inarticle 7 of the above-mentioned decree of June 6, 1984
- dissemination of scientific and technical information
- promoting the results of scientific and technical research
- expert missions carried out in a company, a local authority, an administration, a public establishment, an association or a foundation"
